We never know when breakthrough moments might occur.

Who could have expected that within a dark tomb, behind a heavy stone, that the crucified Son of God could have been raised to life by the secret and mighty power of God?

Certainly the browbeaten and forlorn disciple walking along the road to Emmaus were shattered by the events and in deep conversation when a breakthrough moment was about to occur in their lives.

How does Jesus break through into the lives of His people? Some solid clues are provided here.

During conversations we can discover Jesus, even during times of despondency and disillusionment. Jesus, unrecognised, but risen, sidled up to them and joined the conversation. How often is He the unseen bystander in the discussions His people have together?

It is in the explanations of scripture that their minds are changed and their hearts burn and their eyes are opened. How important it is to discover Jesus in the Bible.

Breakthrough moments can occur through hospitality also. It is as Jesus broke the bread as their table guest that they recognised who He was and is. Then He disappeared. Here we learn of Jesus table presence at our meetings. He is known in the breaking of bread.

Often, though, it is only as we look back that we can recognise that we have had a divine visit. Thus, on reflection, these disciples suddenly realise that they have been changed forever and that they believed in a resurrected Jesus.

Today, then, let us reflect on how Jesus turns up in our lives in the ordinary everyday events of our life's walk.

"Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" (Luke 24: 32)
