The Last Days at Last

Joel 2: 28-32        Acts 2: 15-24

Today we celebrate the last supper together as the Lord's people meeting in these last days.

We recall the death of the Lord Jesus Christ over 2000 years ago and its implications for us today.

His death is the end of the old testament and the beginning of the new testament age - the Day of the Lord.

This day was spoken about in Joel's prophesies in 2: 28-32 as a day in which God's Spirit would be poured out upon all God's people, men and women, sons and daughters.

This Day would be accompanied by wonders and horrific events until the great and dreadful Day of the Lord.

After the crucifixion of Jesus, and His resurrection and ascension, Peter, on the Day of Pentecost, announces that this Last Day of the Spirit has arrived. The Last Days are here at last!

These are the Days we live in. We stand between the first and second coming of the Lord Jesus. At his return there will be the great consummation by the Lord Jesus Christ. God has appointed a Day in which He will judge the world in which we shall all appear before Christ's tribunal to give an account of what we have done in the body, whether good or bad (Acts 17:31, John 6: 22,27, 2 Corinthians 5:10).

Therefore in coming to the Lord's Table we look back at his first coming and claim the benefits of His death. We also look forward in faith, watchfulness and holiness to His return at His second coming. With this in mind we continually shake off worldly security, living in readiness for the return of our King.

As we eat together we anticipate that we shall eat again with Christ in glory. As holy people we celebrate a holy communion. We celebrate the Lord's death until He comes.

"After taking the cup, He gave thanks and said 'Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you that I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes!'" (Luke 22: 17)
